I was absolutely floored when Hourglass revealed this year’s holiday palettes but this time, for reasons beyond the makeup. For those who may not be familiar with the artist behind the artwork, her name is Sashaunisex and I have been following her work since ~2013.

Sashaunisex is a Ukrainian tattoo artist known for her vibrant and sticker-esque watercolor tattoos. When thinking of watercolor, bold, geometric, and vibrancy aren’t normally the first words to come to mind but Sashaunisex has found a way to bridge that gap. Honoring essential tattoo elements (color theory, line work, composition, balance), Sashaunisex’s work makes for a tattoo that will both captivate the eye and age gracefully in both technique and aesthetic. Her artwork has stretched the limits of how the watercolor medium can exist, stamping her legacy as a tattoo artist who brought a fresh perspective to the space.

Which brings me back to Hourglass Cosmetics; I would like to give their brand partnership/marketing team all a raise for finding an industry gem and bringing her artwork to a new medium – beauty packaging. Hourglass Cosmetics has entirely redefined the cruelty-free, luxury beauty space by creating innovative formulations that bring professional makeup-artist results straight to consumers, all while honoring their cruelty-free purpose. They are a brand I envision on luxurious vanities and pro-kits for decades to come.

If executed effectively, brand partnerships should not only expand boundaries, but gel two worlds together that would otherwise not have the opportunity to collide. Hourglass Cosmetics did just that, especially at a pivotal time where the higher powers of Artificial Intelligence have been stripping away the heart in art.
